Bears Fall to Vermont in Home Opener Saturday Afternoon
2/3/2018 1:31:00 PM | Men's Lacrosse
MACON, Ga. – Mercer fell to Vermont, 11-3, in the Bears' season-opening men's lacrosse contest Saturday at Five Star Stadium.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Scott Baird scored the first goal of the season in the second minute to give the Bears (0-1) an early 1-0 lead. Vermont (2-0) evened the odds when Rob Hudson scored a man-up goal, assisted by Braiden Davis. The Catamounts added another when Liam Rischmann scored with just over five minutes remaining in the first period of play. Patrick Marks forced Vermont to come up with a big save with just under a minute to play in the first quarter, but was denied as the period ended, with the Catamounts leading, 2-1.
Â
Vermont stretched its lead to a three-goal difference, 4-1, over the course of the second period. The Catamounts out-shot the Bears 8-4 in the period and entered the locker room with a three-goal lead at the break.
Â
The Catamounts added yet another in the second minute of the second half to extend its lead to 5-1. Mercer quickly responded when Matt Quinn fired one in, while Bryan Gibson earned his second assist of the day. Vermont stretched its lead to 6-2 as Hudson scored his second goal of the day in the ninth minute of the third period.
Â
The Bears came out with a quick goal to start the fourth period as Matt Hughes went coast-to-coast after Mercer won the opening faceoff, to cut the deficit to three (6-3). Vermont's explosive offense proved to be too much as they added another five goals in the fourth period to claim an 11-3 victory.
NOTABLES
"We are certainly disappointed in the loss today. Â Our short comings against Vermont were decision making and skill set. Â We played with effort the entire game but you its difficult to overcome unforced turnovers and poor game time decisions. Â To Vermont's credit, they played with confidence and made plays when their team needed it most. Â We need to continue to develop as a team and take advantage of the opportunities ahead of us. Â This team has character, I truly believe they will continue to work hard and bounce back." - Head Coach Kyle Hannan
RECORDS UPDATE
The Bears will be back in action next Saturday, Feb. 10, as they play host to Lehigh at Five Star Stadium. The game is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
