Bears Open Southern Conference Play Saturday At Jacksonville

MACON, Ga. – The Mercer men's lacrosse team opens Southern Conference play Saturday, March 17 by visiting the Jacksonville University Dolphins. Start time at D.B. Mine Field is set for 1 p.m. (ET). This will be the SoCon opener for both squads.

Series History
Jacksonville leads the series 5-2. The Dolphins defeated the Bears 13-7 a year ago at Macon. The last time the two teams met in Jacksonville (4/23/16), Mercer was a 12-5 winner.

Scouting Jacksonville
Jacksonville enters Saturday's matchup holding a 2-4 overall record, with both wins coming at home. The Dolphins lost 12-11 in overtime at home to Ohio State on Feb. 25 in their most recent competition … Jacksonville's two wins came against Navy (12-7) and Detroit Mercy (15-8) … The Dolphins are averaging 11 goals per game while yielding 11.25 goals per contest … Jacksonville is averaging 33.3 shots per game … Junior midfielder Eric Applegate was named the Southern Conference Offensive Player of the Month for February. Applegate posted a team-high 18 points (12 goals/6 assists) during the month as the Dolphins went 2-3, with each of their losses coming against nationally ranked opponents.

Bear Bones

Senior midfielder Scott Baird has starred for the Bears on offense this season, leading the squad with 18 points on a team-high 13 goals and assisting on five as well. Baird also leads the team in total shots (56) and shots on goal (31).
Seniors Matt Quinn and Bryan Gibson are second on the team in scoring with 12 points apiece. Quinn has nine goals and three assists, while Gibson has seven goals and five assists.
Sophomore goalkeeper Bradley Hodoval is 26th in the nation in saves per game (10.14), with a total of 71 on the season.
Freshman defender Matt Hughes is fourth in the nation in caused turnovers per game, forcing an average of 2.57 per game. The team ranks 18^th in the country as a squad (7.71 per game).
