Mercer falls to 13-5 on the campaign following Saturday’s games
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Mercer dropped both games on Saturday, falling to Lamar in the first game by the score of 2-1 and then dropping a 7-1 contest to No. 25 Mississippi State. Following the doubleheader loss, Mercer falls to 13-5 on the year.

Game 1: Lamar 2, Mercer 1
The Bears ended the first inning empty handed as Meghan Rud was stranded on third. Rud kicked off the game with a walk and stolen base, later reaching third off the sacrifice bunt from Laurenne Sanchez. Mercer was unable to plate the first run as Megan Lane struck out and Quirisa Mauga popped up to end the threat.

The Cardinals struck first in the bottom of the second inning following back-to-back two-out singles, bringing home Talley from second for the 1-0 advantage.

The Bears tied the game at one apiece in the top of the sixth inning, scoring one run on one hit. Sanchez roped a one-out double and later stole third to set up for the eventual game-tying run. After Mauga was walked with two outs, both runners advanced on a wild pitch, bringing home Sanchez from third.

Lamar put the game away in the bottom of the seventh inning as Megan Bilgri walked Mattox to load the bases with two away before walking in the game-winning run in Myers.

Bilgri finished the game with four hits allowed, two earned runs and five strikeouts.

The Bulldogs wasted no time in flexing their muscles as Reggie Harrison homered to deep left center in the bottom of the first inning for the 1-0 advantage.

The Bears saw their chance to tie go by the wayside in the top of the third inning as Mauga struck out with the based juiced to end the threat. Mauga did not go down quietly though, forcing a 16-pitch at bat before yielding the battle.

Mercer cracked through in the top of the fourth inning as Allie Jones roped a two-out RBI double to left center, bringing home Abby Walsh for the game-tying run.

Mississippi State regained control of the game in the bottom of the fourth after Sarai Niu led off the inning with a solo shot to dead center field. The Bulldogs ended up plating four more runs on two hits and two Mercer errors.

Mercer had its chance to cut into the deficit in the top of the fifth inning with the bases loaded once again, this time with one away. The Bears were unable to bring home a run as Caroline Taylor and Emma Andrew recorded the final two outs of the frame.

The Bulldogs capped off the scoring in the bottom of the sixth inning as Petrey belted a solo homer, the squads third of the day, giving Mississippi State the 7-1 lead.
