Furman hits seventh-inning homer to bury Mercer on Senior Day
MACON, Ga. – Mercer softball fell to the Furman Paladins in the final game of the 2018 regular season by the final score of 2-1. Prior to today's game, the Bears honored six student-athletes as part of Mercer's Senior Day. With the loss, Mercer concludes the season with a 32-17 overall record and an 11-5 mark in Southern Conference action.

Both offenses were stymied in the first two innings, combining for just two hits for two scoreless innings. However, for the third consecutive game the Paladins struck first with a sacrifice fly to left field, plating Duggar who led off the inning with a double down the left field line.

The Bears evened the contest in the bottom of the fourth inning with a long solo shot from Caroline Taylor, her 12th long ball of the season. Taylor's homer was her 44th of her career and sparked the Bears' fans on Senior Day.

Mercer had a chance to take a late lead in the bottom of the sixth inning with runners on first and second with two away, but failed to do so after Quirisa Mauga harmlessly flew out to right field. The Paladins used the momentum in their favor after Guimbarda launched a go-ahead solo blast to left center for the 2-1 advantage in the top of the seventh frame.

The Bears were unable to bring home the game-tying run in the bottom of the seventh, going 1-2-3 to conclude the regular season.

Seniors Jill McElderry and Megan Bilgri split time in the circle in the final regular season game with McElderry garnering the start and Bilgri entering in relief. Bilgri was faced with the decision, finishing with 3.2 innings pitched and yielding one run on two hits. Bilgri finished the game with one strikeout in the process.
