Mercer drops first SoCon points of the season
MACON, Ga. – The Mercer women's soccer team dropped a hard-fought 2-1 battle to the UNCG Spartans Sunday afternoon at Betts Stadium.
Â
Woman of the Match
Sophomore forward Ally Fordham was the woman of the match for Mercer. Returning from injury, Fordham touched the pitch for the first time this season in the 41st minute of play. Less than three minutes later, Fordham netted the Bears lone goal.
How It Happened
UNCG controlled the opening minutes of the first half, testing keeper Jordyn Ebert in the 8th minute. It wasn't until the 29th minute until the Bears recorded their first shot. Moments later, Payton Schurr rocketed one towards goal but was just high of the frame.
Â
Mercer would find the opener in the 43rd minute as Pace Stephenson sent a ball into Ally Fordham who headed it past the keeper. The Spartans quickly responded, equalizing in the 44th minute, as the teams entered the locker room tied at 1-1.
Â
Both teams would come out of the break extremely aggressive, searching for a game-winner. UNCG racked up 10 shots in the second half, with Mercer recording four.
Â
The Spartans broke through in the 82nd minute as Emily Jensen beat the keeper, following a rebound off the post. Mercer pushed forward in hopes of late equalizer but were unable to find the back of the net.
With the loss, Mercer is now 6-4-4 on the season and is 1-1-2 in the SoCon.
Â
Notables
» Jordyn Ebert earned her eighth start on the season, snagging two saves. Ebert went down in the 63rd minute due to a collision with a UNCG player. The Bears' keeper would fight through the adversity, remaining in the match for the full 90 minutes.
» Despite the many chances the Bears created, UNCG's keeper was only force to make one save.
Â
Â
Quotables
"It was a tough one today. I felt we came out a bit sluggish. We weren't our typical selves with high energy, tenacity, and resiliency. But to our girls' credit we overcame that and we got the first goal. I thought we had a good chance to get three points today. Unfortunately, we lost our focus and UNCG scored within a minute to tie things up before the half. If that doesn't happen I think we have a better chance to come away with the three points. Credit to UNCG, they just found a second gear. We will be fine. We look forward to getting back at it next Friday at The Citadel." —Head Coach Tony Economopoulos
Up Next
Mercer will look to bounce back, traveling to Charleston, S.C. to face The Citadel Bulldogs, next Friday, Oct. 5. The match is slated for 3 p.m.
