Perez’s goal and DeRose’s five saves earns one point for Mercer
PEORIA, Ill. – Mercer remains undefeated on the campaign following a 1-1 draw against Missouri State to kick off the Bradley Invitational in Peoria, Ill. Kobe Perez scored a late goal in the 73rd minute and JR DeRose came up with a season-high five saves to preserve one point for the Orange & Black. Following the draw, Mercer is now 4-0-1 on the season, while Missouri State holds a 2-0-2 overall record.
STAT OF THE MATCH
The Bears were outshot by Missouri State with a final count of 18-12. However, Mercer outshot the Bears 9-7 after trailing 11-3 in the shot count at halftime.
MAN OF THE MATCH
JR DeRose proved to be the man of the match, keeping Mercer in the contest from the start. DeRose notched a save in the second minute of the match and did not lose focus for the Bears. The redshirt-sophomore keeper finished the day with a season-high five saves as he held Missouri State to just one goal.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Missouri State wasted little time in putting a ball on frame, testing JR DeRose just 1:03 into the match. DeRose was up to the challenge, stoning Conor Ingram's shot for his first save of the match. The Bears outshot Mercer 4-0 before the Orange & Black tallied their first shot off the foot of Michael Ille in the 15th minute.
Neither team found the back of the net in the opening 45 minutes of competition, despite Missouri State outshooting Mercer, 11-3. DeRose notched two saves in the first half, while Ille was the only Bear to put a shot on target in the 32nd minute.
The match's first goal came in the 46th minute with Missouri State striking first, fresh out the locker room. Josh Dolling buried a penalty kick just 55 seconds out of the gate following a Mercer foul inside the 18-yard box.
The Bears kicked into another gear midway through the second half, recording three unanswered shots in a span of three minutes. It was the third shot that proved a big one as Kobe Perez found the back of the net for the second time in as many games. Perez's equalizer came in the 73rd minute of play and was assisted by Arteaga for his fifth assist on the campaign.
Mercer outshot Missouri State 6-2 in the final 20 minutes of play to turn the tides in favor of the Orange & Black. DeRose came up clutch yet again in the 89th minute, turning away Dolling's potential game-winner for his fourth save of the match to force overtime for the first time this season.
The Bears outshot Missouri State 3-2 in the 20 extra minutes of overtime. However, neither squad was able to find the back of the net, resulting in the 1-1 draw. DeRose came up huge in extended play, notching his fifth save in the 109th minute.
