Stanton Schorr finishes fourth individually at 5-under-par
PALM CITY, Fla. – The Mercer men's golf team earned runner-up honors at the UNCG-hosted Martin Downs Collegiate after shooting an even-par 284 in the third round at Osprey Creek on Tuesday.
Mercer finished the tournament at 8-under-par (856) and was six strokes off tournament champion and Southern Conference rival UNCG (-14). The Bears entered Tuesday's final 18 holes just two strokes behind UNCG, which rallied from a day-one deficit with a 15-under-par 273 on the second day of competition.
The runner-up finish marks a strong start to the spring season for Mercer, which also earned four top-five finishes in five tournaments during the fall.

Coach Kayden's Take
"Today the guys didn't quite execute the way they had during the first two days of the tournament," said head coach Kirk Kayden. "We still have a solid tournament and hung with the SoCon champions for 50-54 holes…we've just got to have a better finish the next time we see them.
"Today was a matter of execution down the stretch. A couple double bogeys hurt us. But we're very close and encouraged by the play of all seven guys."
Mercer on Team Leaderboard
The Bears fluctuated between second and third place with James Madison – which finishes at 5-under-par – but could never catch the Spartans for first place on the final day of play. UNCG shot 4-under-par for the third round, giving it a six-stroke cushion over Mercer in the final standings. Mercer bested two other SoCon opponents, Chattanooga (-1) and Samford (+11), in the 13-team field.
Mercer on Individual Leaderboard
All seven Bears earned top-30 individual finishes in Palm City, including Stanton Schorr and Martin Plukka, who placed fourth and tied for ninth, respectively. Plukka shot a team-low 70 on Tuesday to jump seven spots for the top-10 finish. Schorr shot 1-over-par 73 to maintain his top-five finish.
Up Next
The Bears will take the upcoming week off from competition before traveling to Auburn, Ala. for the Tiger Invitational on Feb. 24-26.
