Mercer defeats Akron, falls to No. 19 Indiana
Â
Mercer (5-10) beat Akron, 9-2, for the second time in as many days. Indiana improved to 13-0 with its win over the Bears.
Â
Game 1: Mercer 9, Akron 2
Freshman Bailey Pattison earned her first collegiate win as she went the distance in the circle against Akron. Pattison allowed just two runs – both on solo home runs – on four total hits and struck out four Zips. She was backed by nine runs from the Bears, who struck early and often offensively.
Â
Allie Jones drove in Micayla Rood with a RBI groundout for Mercer's first run and was followed by a two-run single from Abby Walsh, which gave Mercer a 3-0 lead after the opening frame. Akron would get one run back with a solo home run in the second, but freshman Tori Ash belted her first collegiate home run in the home half of the inning to stunt the Zips' momentum.
Â
It was all Mercer the rest of the way. RBI doubles by Jones and Amanda Schwartz in the third extended the Bears' lead to five runs. Laurenne Sanchez added a final blow in the fifth with a two-RBI single.
Â
Game 2: No. 19 Indiana 8, Mercer 7 (11 innings)
Mercer led 5-0 through three innings but was unable to hold onto its lead as nationally-ranked and undefeated Indiana rallied with eight runs en route to taking the nightcap. The game was Mercer's longest of the season, going 11 innings.
Â
The Bears scored their first five runs over the second and third frames. Abby Walsh scored on a fielding error at first base and was followed by Shaila Warren, who scored in the next at bat when Tori Ash reached on an RBI infield single. Walsh came up big once again the next inning, blasting a two-run home run to center field.
Â
Indiana scored three runs in the fifth on a RBI double and two-run home run off of Mercer starter Lynn Gardner, who tossed nine innings in the contest. Gardner struck out eight Hoosiers while allowing six runs (four earned). She was relieved by Pattison, who pitched two innings, in the sixth. Indiana tied the game, 7-7, with another two-run home run in the top of the seventh.
Â
Mercer shifted back to Gardner in the circle for extra innings. The Hoosiers took their first lead of the game with a third two-run home run in the top of the 10th, but the Bears would respond with two runs of their own in the home half. With Laurenne Sanchez and Megan Lane on second and first base, Allie Jones singled to center field and forced a fielding error that allowed both runners to score and tie the game. A throwing error by the Bears in the top of the 11th led to Indiana plating the eventual game-winning run.
