Mercer defeats Rutgers in season opener
MACON, Ga. – Mercer claimed a 2-1 victory over Rutgers in the 2019 season opener to highlight a two-game split on the first day of the Mercer Invitational on Friday at Sikes Field.
Â
The Bears (1-1) later fell to Army, 8-6, in the final contest of the day. Four total games were played Friday as the Mercer Invitational kicked off.
Â
Game 1: Mercer 2, Rutgers 1
Freshman Lynn Gardner tossed a complete game, three-hitter in her collegiate debut to help lead the Bears past Rutgers, 2-1, on Friday afternoon. The right-hander allowed just one run – a solo home run – and three hits while fanning a pair and walking one batter.
Â
With the game tied, 1-1, in the sixth inning, Catie Josselet roped a go-ahead RBI double to the gap, scoring Amanda Schwartz from second base. Gardner then went back out to the circle to finish off the Scarlet Knights with a 1-2-3 frame in the seventh.
Â
Mercer struck first with one run in the first inning; Schwartz was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring home Megan Lane, who had a bunt single and stole second base earlier in the frame. The Bears mustered just four hits in the contest but came away with the victory.

Â
Game 2: Army 8, Mercer 6
Mercer rallied after trailing by as many as four runs (5-1) in the fifth inning but eventually came up short in an 8-6 defeat to Army. The Black Knights jumped ahead 3-0 on a home run in the third inning – the runs were charged as unearned to Mercer starter Lauren O'Dell – and later added two runs in the top of the fifth.
Â
The Bears' rally was sparked by a two-run double by Abby Walsh and a RBI single by Allie Jones in the fifth that brought Mercer within one run (5-4). Walsh, who went 2-for-3 with three RBI, tripled earlier in the game to plate Mercer's first run. Jones came up big again just one inning later, scoring Micayla Rood to tie the game, 5-5, on a fielder's choice in a bases-loaded situation.
Â
A slew of fielding miscues and timely hits by Army gave the game away in the top of the seventh. The Black Knights scored three runs to lead 8-5. Megan Lane would drive home one more run for the Bears in the bottom of the seventh.
