Mercer Takes Down Army in Saturday Split
2/9/2019 9:44:00 PM | Softball
Bears defeat Army before falling to Rutgers
The Bears moved to 2-2 overall with the split. They will conclude their opening weekend against Jacksonville State at 1:15 p.m. on Sunday in the tournament finale.
Game 1: Mercer 7, Army 5
The Bears rallied from a 4-0 deficit to defeat Army, 7-5, in their first game of the afternoon. Freshman pitcher Lynn Gardner tossed her second complete game in as many days and earned the win. While she allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits, Gardner held the Black Knights scoreless over the final three innings.
After a three-run home run put Army up 4-0 in the top of the third, Mercer rallied with three runs of its own in the home half, including a sacrifice fly by Kenlie Harvey. Mercer took its first lead, 6-5, in the fourth inning with another three-run output. A RBI double from Catie Josselet – who was followed by RBI singles from Micayla Rood and Danielle Castleberry – sparked the rally. Harvey capped the game with a solo home run, the first of her career, in the fifth.

Game 2: Rutgers 8, Mercer 4
Mercer fell into another early hole in its second game of the day and was unable to rally back. Rutgers took a 4-0 lead in the third inning on a grand slam by Anyssa Iliopoulos off of Mercer starter Bailey Pattison. The Bears plated two runs over the following two innings, but the Scarlets Knights stretched their lead to five (7-2) with a three-run home run in the seventh.
Two runs by the Bears – a sacrifice fly by Brooke Knowles and a RBI single by Rood – in the bottom of the seventh pulled Mercer within four runs, but to no avail.
