Bears defeat Cleveland State, 10-2, in five innings
MACON, Ga. – Mercer defeated Cleveland State, 10-2, in five innings to start its Mercer Bears Classic tournament in strong fashion on Friday afternoon at Sikes Field.

Abby Walsh and Megan Lane hit home runs while freshman Bailey Pattison tossed a five-inning complete game and limited the Vikings to a pair of unearned runs. Mercer improved to 11-16 overall and snapped a six-game losing streak.

A four-run second inning gave Mercer an early advantage against the Vikings. Kenlie Harvey and Danielle Castleberry tallied RBI singles in the frame and Shaila Warren and Lane plated Mercer's first two runs after a fielding error. Walsh and Lane added to the Bears' lead with a pair of solo home runs in the third inning. Mercer made it an eight-run lead with a RBI double by Allie Jones and a RBI single by Catie Josselet in the fourth.

After a Mercer fielding error gave way to a pair of runs for Cleveland State, Castleberry ended the game on the run rule with a two-run single through the right side in the bottom of the fifth.

Pattison (5-6) dominated in the circle, needing just 83 pitches to shut down the Vikings. The freshman right-hander tossed five innings and limited Cleveland State to two unearned runs on two hits. She also struck out two batters.
