Bears defeat Fordham before falling to Ball State
Mercer moved to 12-17 overall and 2-1 in this weekend's tournament.
Game 1: Mercer 14, Fordham 7
The Bears tallied a season-best 17 hits and four home runs to power past Fordham. Mercer scored at least once in each of the first five innings, including five in the second and four in the fifth to best Fordham (5-14).
Trailing 2-0 after the opening half inning, Mercer got on the board with a solo home run by Danielle Castleberry. Home runs by Abby Walsh and Tori Ash – who hit a three-run shot – in the second inning gave Mercer a 6-2 advantage. The Rams pulled within one run in the third before Amanda Schwartz extended the Bears' lead to 8-5 with a two-run long ball.
RBI singles by Ash and Kenlie Harvey in the fifth put the game away. Mercer withstood six home runs by Fordham to earn the victory. Freshman Bailey Pattison (6-6) earned the win with 4.2 innings of relief for Stella Preston. Pattison allowed just two runs while scattering seven hits.
Game 2: Ball State 6, Mercer 5
Mercer squandered a 5-1 lead as Ball State scored five unanswered runs to nip the Bears in a hard-fought contest. Lynn Gardner (6-6) took the loss, tossing all seven innings. The freshman left-hander held the Cardinals scoreless through the first three innings but took the loss after they rallied in the later frames.
Castleberry continued a strong day with a two-run single in the third inning, giving Mercer a 2-0 lead. A solo home run by Ball State cut Mercer's lead in half, but a trio of RBI singles by Micayla Rood, Allie Jones and Abby Walsh stretched it back to 5-1.
Ball State's rally started in the fifth with one run. A pair of two-run home runs in the sixth and seventh innings clinched the win for the Cardinals. Ash and Rood reached base in the bottom of the seventh, but a double play all but ended Mercer's threat.
