Mercer took game one in eight innings before dropping the finale
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Mercer and Samford battled it out in a quick two-game Southern Conference set Saturday at the Samford Softball Field, splitting a couple of tough games on the day, 5-4 and 4-7. The Bears now sit at 21-24 overall and 7-4 in conference play this season.
Â
Game One: Mercer 5, Samford 4
Mercer scratched across an unearned run in the top of the eighth inning and held on in the bottom of the frame to take the first leg of the doubleheader.
Â
The Bears struck for four runs in the top of the first inning, two on a double from Abby Walsh and two more on Kenlie Harvey's team-leading fifth home run of her freshman season. However, Samford rallied all the way back and tied things up with a run in the bottom of the sixth.
Â
Sophomore Micayla Rood reached base in four plate appearances to lead the Bears, going 2-for-3 with a couple of walks and two runs scored. Lynn Gardner earned the win in the circle after four innings of one-run work with five strikeouts.
Â
Game Two: Samford 7, Mercer 4
The Bears took their first lead of the game with a three-run top of the sixth, but the Bulldogs responded with four runs of their own to take the series finale.
Â
Kenlie Harvey tied the game up with a two-run shot, then Shaila Warren followed with a solo homer off the top of the wall to put Mercer up. It was Harvey's second homer of the doubleheader and team-leading sixth of the season.
Â
Samford tied the game on a sacrifice fly the following frame, took the lead on a suicide squeeze bunt and added insurance with a two-run homer. After picking up the win in game one, Lynn Gardner (9-9) was saddled with the loss in game two.
Â
