A five-run fourth led the Bears past Western Carolina
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Mercer fell behind early but used a five-run bottom of the fourth inning to take the lead for good and defeat Western Carolina, 7-4, in an elimination game at the Southern Conference Tournament Friday morning at Frost Stadium.
Â
The Bears (26-28) were down 2-4 heading after three and a half innings before rallying for five runs in the frame. Danielle Castleberry put Mercer on top with a two-RBI single up the middle, then Kenlie Harvey laced a two-run double into the gap to put the cherry on top.
Â
Micayla Rood, Allie Jones and Castleberry were all on fire at the plate – the three were responsible for seven of Mercer's 10 hits in the game. Rood was 3-for-4 with a run scored, Jones 2-for-4 with two runs and Castleberry 2-for-3 with three RBI.
Â
In the circle, Lynn Gardner (10-11) bounced back from a tough loss in the opening round to deal 4.2 scoreless frames and pick up the win for the Bears.
Â
Erica Hayes led the Catamounts (21-32) offensively with a 3-for-4 outing. Shaina Reed (9-17) wore the loss after allowing five runs – four earned – on seven hits in 3.0+ innings of work.
