The Bears scored six early and held on late
GREENVILLE, S.C. – Mercer plated six in the first two frames of the ballgame and held off a late rally to down Furman, 6-4, in the Southern Conference series opener at Pepsi Stadium Saturday night.
Â
After waiting out a nearly four-hour weather delay, Mercer (23-27, 8-7 SoCon) jumped on the Paladins early, racking up the six runs on seven hits and five errors before the fans could dry off their seats.
Â
Allie Jones and Abby Walsh both recorded hits in each of the two innings and drove in runs to get things going for the Bears. Walsh finished the game 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored, while Jones went 2-for-4 with a couple of runs. Tori Ash and Megan Lane both added two-hit performances, as well.
Â
On the mound, Bailey Pattison (11-9) carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning before Taylor Vahle broke the no-no and the shutout with one swing of the bat on a solo shot with two outs in the inning. Pattison earned the win, working 5.2 innings in the circle and allowed four runs on six hits. Lynn Gardner (5) took over afterwards and finished the game to pick up the save.
Â
Furman made things interesting with a three-spot in the bottom of the sixth to cut the lead to just two. However, with two on and two outs, Gardner was able to fan the next batter to thwart the late push. Emily DeMonte (11-16) wore the loss after scattering six runs on 10 hits in seven innings of work.
Â
Notable
Mercer and Furman will wrap up the regular season with a doubleheader starting at noon Sunday at Pepsi Stadium.
