Mercer wraps up regular season with three-game SoCon set

MACON, Ga. – Mercer softball will draw an end to its 52-game regular season slate with a three-game Southern Conference series with Furman at Pepsi Softball Stadium in Greenville, S.C., Saturday and Sunday.

Due to the threat of inclement weather on Saturday evening and Sunday, the series will now begin with a doubleheader on Saturday at 3 p.m. and conclude with a single game on Sunday at 12:00 p.m.

The Bears (22-27, 7-7 SoCon) will be looking to bounce back from a rough weekend against league-leading UNCG at Sikes Field, when the Spartans earned the series sweep after three late-game rallies. Mercer is currently in a battle for the third-seed in the conference tournament in Chattanooga next week.

QUICK HITS

The Bears are set to square-off with the Paladins to draw an end to the regular season in a series that has SoCon Tournament seeding implications.
Mercer currently sits at fourth in the league with a 7-7 record – 1.5 games behind third place Chattanooga and two games ahead of ETSU and Furman.
Senior Megan Lane leads all active SoCon players with 163 career hits and ranks fourth with 34 career stolen bases and 95 career runs batted in.
Danielle Castleberry is one percentage point off the league lead with a .381 batting average on the season – with six more hits than anybody else – and is tied at the top with a .486 on base percentage.
Senior Shaila Warren is batting at the second-highest clip of all SoCon players in conference games this year with a .405 average.
Micayla Rood has been a run-scoring machine for the Bears, crossing the plate 40 times to lead the league in the category – Rood is two runs shy of cracking the school's single-season top 10.

SERIES HISTORY
Mercer holds a narrow, 14-12 all-time record over Furman, with the Paladins taking the last four series from the Bears – dating back to 2015. The two met to close the 2018 regular season and Furman took two one-run wins to earn the series victory.

SCOUTING THE PALADINS
After finishing last year third in the conference, Furman got off to a tough start in SoCon play in 2019 – winning just three of its first 11 league contests. The Paladins got back on track last weekend, however, taking two of three at Western Carolina to win its first conference series of the year.
