Rookie Kylie Helm hit her first career home run in the Bears’ win over MTSU
Â
The Bears powered their way to victory in the first game of the day with three home runs and five extra-base hits en route to the third 10-run game of the season. Sophomore Kenlie Harvey and rookie Kylie Helm accounted for all three long balls for Mercer. Harvey continued her hot streak on the weekend with a pair of home runs today for a total of three dingers in the tournament.
Â
Harvey finished the day with three hits that tied for the team lead, as well as two RBI and three runs. Elisa Rosado, Allie Jones and Amanda Schwartz also had three hits on the day to match Harvey's offensive production, while Jones stole four bases between the two games. Schwartz added to the power surge on the day with a homer of her own against Nicholls State.
Â
In the circle, Bailey Pattison improved to 3-1 after tossing a complete game in game one. She allowed six runs (earned) while not issuing a walk and striking out a pair of Blue Raiders. Amber Byrd drew the starting nod in game two and scattered three runs (two earned) over 5.0 innings of work.
Game One: Mercer 10, Middle Tennessee State 6
The Bears fell into an early hole after three first-inning home runs spotted Middle Tennessee State an early 5-0 lead.
Â
Mercer cut the deficit down to two in the third inning after Harvey started the rally with a one-out bunt single. The bases were loaded after Micayla Rood reached on a fielder's choice and a Rosado base hit. Danielle Castleberry drove in the first run with her second hit by pitch of the day before Jones drove in Rood and Rosado with a single to center.
Â
Harvey maintained her hot pace from Friday night in the fourth inning with her second home run in three games to bring Mercer within one at 5-4. Â The Bears stayed on the offensive in the following frame and captured their first lead of the game. A one-out double by Diamond Williams got things started before Schwartz singled to put runners on the corners and set the stage for Helm. The pinch hitter from Anderson, Mo., blasted her first collegiate home run to push the Bears into the lead, 7-5. Harvey extended the lead with her second homer in as many at-bats to go back-to-back with Helm.
Â
Tori Ash added to the lead in the sixth inning with a two-run double to put the game comfortably in hand for Mercer en route to their fourth victory of the season.
Game Two: Nicholls State 4, Mercer 3
Mercer opened the scoring in game two with two-run homer by Schwartz in the second inning. Abby Walsh led off the inning with a double before being driven home by Schwartz. Nicholls State responded in the home half of the inning to cut the Bears' lead in half, 2-1, before tying the game in the following frame.
Â
Schwartz allowed the Black and Orange to retake the lead in the fifth inning with an RBI single, but the Colonels once again had an answer. Nicholls State manufactured a run in the bottom of the seventh to earn the walk-off win.
