Mercer Splits Opening Day of 2020 Season
2/7/2020 11:15:00 PM | Softball
The Bears will continue the Mercer Invitational against Dayton and EKU on Saturday.
MACON, Ga. – The Mercer softball team kicked off its 2020 campaign by splitting the first two games of the Mercer Invitational against Wright State (10-2, 5 Inn.) and Tennessee Tech. (7-10) on Friday at Sikes Field.
Â
The Bears combined to hit .391 (20-for-51) on the afternoon with seven doubles and a home run. Additionally, they drew nine walks and outscored the opposition, 17-12.
Â
Rookie Elisa Rosado led the way for the Bears' offense as she posted a .625 batting average (5-for-8) with two doubles, three RBI and three runs scored. Rosado and Kylie Helm were the only players for Mercer to record a hit in both games with Rosado managing to record two multi-hit efforts.
Â
Micayla Rood added a 3-for-6 performance with two walks, two RBI and two runs. Abby Walsh drew a team-high three walks on the day en route to a .714 on-base percentage. Allie Jones produced a pair of doubles with her two hits on the afternoon, while Danielle Castleberry provided the pop with Mercer's only home run.
Â
Bailey Pattison was in control of the first game in the circle, scattering four hits and two runs (earned) over 4.0 innings of work. The Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., native struck out three hitters. Rookie Riley Hickok impressed in game two as well, going 3.1 scoreless innings while allowing just three hits.
Game One: Mercer 10, Wright State 2 (5 Inn.)
The Bears' offense came to life in the second inning when they put up four runs on four hits. Mercer started its rally with back-to-back hits from Diamond Williams and Walsh to put runners on second and third. A walk by Jones loaded the bases, and, two batters later, Tori Ash drove a single down the left field line to plate two runs and open the scoring for the game. Rood followed with a two-run single of her own in the inning to extend the lead to four runs.
Â
Wright State started to chip away at the Mercer lead with a run in the top of the third and fourth innings, but a great diving catch by Jones in center field with two outs and the bases loaded limited the damage.
Â
In the home half of the fourth, the Black and Orange once again loaded the bases for Williams who drove in a pair with a single through the left side. Rookie Kylie Helm was called upon later in the inning to pinch hit with the bases loaded. Unphased by the moment, Helm shot the ball to the opposite field for a three-run double in her first collegiate at-bat. Rosado secured the first victory of the season for the Bears with an RBI double in the fifth inning.
Â
Game Two: Tennessee Tech 10, Mercer 7
Tennessee Tech jumped out to an early 2-0 lead thanks to a home run from Raleigh Lewis. The visitors increased their advantage to five runs by the end of the second inning and held a 10-2 lead after four frames.
Â
The Bears had their backs against the wall in the fifth inning as they faced an eight-run deficit with two outs. Rosado was down to her last strike before slapping a single through the right side to keep Mercer's hopes alive. Castleberry was the next batter and sparked some life back into the dugout with a two-run blast over the center field fence to bring Mercer within five, 10-5.
Â
Mercer threatened again in the sixth after a one-out double by Jones, but was unable to trim the TTU lead. The Black and Orange fought until the final out with another Jones doubles plating Castleberry and Rood to make it a 10-7 game. Tennessee Tech managed to retire the next batter to record the final out of the game and come away with the victory. Â
