Mercer returns to action on Saturday at the MTSU Tournament
MACON, Ga. – The Mercer softball team dropped a 7-2 decision to Southern Miss on final day of the Mercer Bears Classic at Sikes Field on Sunday.
Four different players recorded hits in the game, including Danielle Castleberry, Allie Jones, Kenlie Harvey and Bree Comer. In the circle, reliever Amber Byrd tallied a game-high six strikeouts, while Ashlyn Donner was perfect in her lone inning of work.
How It Happened
After neither side was able to score in the first inning, Southern Miss broke through in the second frame. A pair of back-to-back RBI hits by Natalie Hurdle and Karley Nichols opened the scoring before Destini Brown hit a two-run home run to make it 4-0.
Harvey picked up the Bears' first hit of the game in the home half of the inning as she beat out a bunt single. She advanced to second on a wild pitch before going to third on a Comer base knock up the middle. Harvey wound up scoring after the Golden Eagles threw down to second and caught Comer stealing.
Both team's offenses were held in check until the sixth inning when a wild pitch and another Brown homer added three runs for the visitors to make it 7-1.
