Bears Travel to ETSU for SoCon Series

Mercer will open its series against the Bucs with a Friday doubleheader at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
Macon, Ga. – The Mercer softball team heads up to Tennessee this weekend to take on ETSU in a three-game series.
The Bears will open with a doubleheader on Friday at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. before wrapping up the series on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Mercer is 25-15 against ETSU in the all-time series. The last meeting between the two took place in Chattanooga, Tenn., on May 10, 2019 in the Southern Conference Tournament. The Bears established a big lead early in the game, scoring six runs in the first three innings. The early offensive flux by the Bears would prove to be too much for the Buccaneers with the game ending in a 6-1 Mercer victory.

Scouting the Buccaneers
The Buccaneers enter their final home series of the season with a record of 13-19 following a pair of losses versus Appalachian State on Wednesday. ETSU is currently on an 11-game losing skid and boast an 8-10 record when playing at Betty Basler Field. Freshman Lilly Holston leads the Bucs' offensive efforts, boasting team highs in batting average (.370), on-base percentage (.460), hits (30) and runs scored (17). Senior Julia Fritz has added 29 hits on the season with nine doubles and four home runs while driving in 15 runs. In the circle, the Bucs rely heavily on the right arm of redshirt senior Kelly Schmidt who has pitched 103.1 of the team's 218.1 innings on the season while earning 18 of 32 starts. Schmidt boasts a 7-8 record on the season with a 2.10 ERA. She has tossed 11 complete games, including four shutouts, and has struck out 72 hitters while allowing opponents to hit .250.
