McCreary, Robertson Lead Bears to Victory Over Morehead State

21 PTS, 6 REB for McCreary; 18 PTS, 5 A for Robertson
MACON, Ga. – Jalyn McCreary and Kamar Robertson propelled the Mercer men's basketball team to a roaring victory over Morehead State, 79-52, on Saturday afternoon at Hawkins Arena. McCreary posted 21 points and six rebounds, going 10-14 from the field. Kamar Robertson logged 18 points and five assists, including a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line.
"I always feel like it's going in when he [McCreary] shoots it," head coach Greg Gary said. "He provides us offense where you don't have to run a lot of stuff for him, he just knows how to score. He made some big shots when they cut the lead a little bit. Having him be able to make those plays for us is huge."
27 points is the largest margin of victory over a Division I program this season for the Bears. It started from the beginning as Mercer gathered an early advantage, 11-1, and the Eagles never claimed a lead. 27 points was the largest lead of the day for Mercer, as the team never stopped attacking.
Four players scored in double figures for the Bears with Shawn Walker Jr. (10 PTS) and James Glisson III (14 PTS) rounding out the list. Glisson III entered the game for his first appearance of the season to a standing ovation from the home crowd. He sank all four free throws on his way to 14 points in 14 minutes played.
"He's [Glisson III] been here for four years, so I'm really happy to see him out there," Gary expressed. "He just knows what we need to do on offense, on defense. It helps our depth with him coming back."
The Bears had a strong defensive showing, limiting Morehead State's two best scorers, Alex Gross and Mark Freeman, to just eight points combined. The duo only had two points each at halftime. The Eagles faced multiple scoring droughts, struggling to find a rhythm. Mercer outperformed Morehead State in rebounds, assists, turnovers, and steals.
"Our defense really carried out the game plan and made it tough on them [Morehead State]," Gary explained. "They've got a really good post player, Gross, and Dave right away came in from a physical standpoint, and our guys pressured. The guys are the ones that deserve the credit because they played at a high level defensively tonight."
Mercer shot 58% from the field for the seventh game of the season over 50%. The Bears only missed two free throws, finishing 13-15 from the stripe.
Saturday's win was the first over Morehead State since 1979 and continued the streak of winning at home against the Eagles. Mercer now leads the all-time series, 3-2.
UP NEXT: The Bears will conclude non-conference play on the road at Troy on Wednesday, December 21 at 7 p.m. ET.
