Bears Dominate on Education Day Against Middle Georgia State
12/6/2022 2:56:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Over 1700 Bibb County School District students were in attendance for Mercer’s 100-62 win
MACON, Ga. – Jalyn McCreary and the Mercer men's basketball team played to an exciting 100-62 win for the Bibb County School District students in attendance at the game against Middle Georgia State on Tuesday morning at Hawkins Arena.
Mercer University Athletics hosted an Education Day for Bibb County students to envision a path to college and have an experiential physical education learning opportunity.
"The kids right off the bat gave us a lot of energy," head coach Greg Gary said. "It was awesome to play in front of them. Our marketing department did an awesome job of pulling off this Education Day."
McCreary became the first player to score 25 points for Mercer this season, besting his career-high in points for the third time this year. He finished 12-13 from the field, all within 12 minutes in the second half. He also notched three rebounds, two assists and two steals.
"He [McCreary] gives us something where you don't have to run plays for him," Gary added. "He just knows how to put the ball in the hole. He played with a lot of energy, and I'm proud of the way he performed in the second half."
While McCreary shined in the scoring aspects, the team as a whole excelled in all areas. 31 assists for the Bears set a new program-record for single-game assists, beating the previous mark of 28 set against Valparaiso in 2013. Luis Hurtado Jr. recorded a team-high seven assists along with 12 points.
"They're very unselfish," Gary commented. "They do a good job of sharing the basketball and making plays for others, so I'm very happy about that."
Freshman TJ Grant finished one rebound shy of a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds. Harrison Drake made his presence known on both ends of the court, logging four steals and five assists.
The starting lineup featured three freshmen for the first time this season with Jah Quinones making his first start of the year alongside David Craig and Michael Zanoni. The starting three along with TJ Grant and Braden Sparks accounted for 56 points from the first-years.
Mercer shot 60.9% from the field collectively which is the highest total for the season. The team also surrendered only six turnovers, another season-best. The Bears led for almost 39 minutes against crosstown foe Middle Georgia State.
UP NEXT: The Mercer men's basketball program is back on the road against Florida Gulf Coast on Saturday, December 10 at 7:00 p.m.
