Mercer beat by Georgia Tech
Atlanta, Ga. – The Mercer softball team was defeated by Georgia Tech, 9-1, in a Tuesday evening match-up.Â
Â
"Georgia Tech is a strong, well-coached team", said Head Coach Lindsay Fico. "We knew we had another challenge facing them this early in the season.Â
Â
I felt like we made better adjustments at the plate throughout the game.  Kylie Helm had a very productive day along with Tori Hedgecock and Diamond Williams. I feel like they all are going to produce a ton of runs as they continue to mature offensively.Â
Â
We have to keep working to clean up our defense and free passes from the circle. Good teams capitalize on those mistakes and a game can get out of reach quickly. I know with a little more focus at practice on the small things, those results will improve."
Â
Mercer 1, Georgia Tech 9Â
The Yellow Jackets would be the first on the board. Tricia Awald walked, advanced to second on a throw, and scored following Mallorie Black's single to right field. Black would score two batters later with a single from Emma Minghini. Mercer, 0 Yellow Jackets, 2.
Â
The walk by Tori Hedgecock would be the only plate action by the Bears in the second inning. The Yellow Jackets totaled two additional runs in the inning by Emma Kauf and Ella Edgmon. Mercer 0, Yellow Jackets 4.Â
Â
Madison Headley touched the first base in the top of the third with a single hit to the pitcher. The Bear offense would end with zero runs along with the bear defense allowing zero runs in the third.Â
Â
The Bears streak of one hit per inning continued with a single up the middle from Kylie Helm. That would not be enough as the Yellow Jackets extended their lead by two in the bottom of the fourth. Trica Awald and Mallorie Black recorded runs. Mercer 0, Yellow Jackets 6.Â
Â
The Emma Kauf homered in the bottom of the fifth, making the lead 7-0 for the Yellow Jackets.Â
Â
The Bears would reach the board in the top of the sixth with three straight singles from Diamond Williams, Helm, and Hedgecock. Williams was able to score after advancing to third on a wild pitch followed by the single from Hedgecock. Grace Connelly for the Yellow Jackets homered in the bottom of the sixth (run rule) for a two RBI to end the game. Mercer 1, Yellow Jackets 9.
