CLUB HISTORY:
The celebrated history of the Country Club of Spartanburg chronicles the tenacity of its members to uphold the Club's rich traditions and cherished legacy for over a century. In the summer of 1908, a founder's meeting was held at the A.W. Twichell home, which effectively became the first clubhouse and Twichell the first President. The founders seized the momentum to form a company, select land, clear fairways, prepare the original 9 holes with sand greens, and retain the Club's first golf professional, Mr. Newman. Within two years, the first foursome of Rouquie, Jennnings, Andrews, and Wilson struck the opening tee shots!
After the Great Depression, the Club was reorganized and chartered as the Country Club of Spartanburg on October 1, 1934. Earlier that year, the first swimming pool was also built from the generous contribution of Mr. Isaac Andrews.
THE COURSE:
The classic layout of the original nine holes is widely attributed to the design expertise of acclaimed golf course architect, Donald Ross. The course, which today stretches to 6,648 yards, was renovated in 1985 by John LaFoy and restored by Kris Spence to the original Ross-style design in 2008.
Some of golf's great personalities and events have left their stamp on the Country Club of Spartanburg. For many years, the Club hosted a LPGA tournament, under the monikers of Betsy Rawls or Peach Blossom Classic. Winners included female golf legends Louise Suggs, Babe Zaharias, Betsy Rawls, and Mickey Wright. Cary Middlecoff, who once held the Club's course record, won 40 PGA tournaments, including the 1955 Masters and two U.S. Open titles. Four of the 59 members in the SC Golf Hall of Fame have called CCS their home club.
LAST TIME OUT:
Tobias Jonsson, led the Bears placing T16 overall in the Augusta Haskins Award Invitational in Augusta Georgia finishing 214 (-2).
Jonsson, Ethan Werblo, and Jonathan Parker all came together on the first day and after the first 36 were able to finish even or better in either the first or second rounds. Jonsson doing so in both rounds after the first day of the event. Jonsson would go on to record 12 Birdies after three rounds at the Forest Hills Golf Club as well as an Eagle that lead to him leading the Orange and Black on the weekend.
Werblo, right behind him on the scoring table, recoded seven Birdies. Martin Plukka just a bit further down continued his success in Augusta by tallying eight Birdies.
