Greensboro, N.C. – The #5 Mercer Bears started the Southern Conference Softball Tournament with a 4-3 loss to #4 Furman.

FURMAN 4, MERCER 3

The Paladins took an early four-run lead in the bottom of the second. Emily Bartlett led with a single and advanced to third on a throwing error. Bartlett scored on a catcher's obstruction. Marina Griffin reached on error, and Caitlin Goldwait scored, who also reached on error. Chrissy Fleming doubled, scoring Griffin.

Madison Headley recorded the first hit for the bears with a single to left field in the top of the third.

In the top of the fourth, Alyssa Woods led with a single followed by a single from Williams. Tori Hedgecock doubled to right field, scoring Woods and Williams to cut the Paladins lead in half. Furman 4, Mercer 2.

Headley recorded another single in the top of the fifth.

As the lead of the seventh, Hedgecock singled. Elisa Rosado entered as a pinch runner and stole second before advancing to third on a ground ball from Kendall Owens. Another single from Headley scored Rosado to bring the game within one.

The bears were unable to take the lead, losing game one.

Hannah Pitts held the Paladins to two hits, striking out three batters.

The Bears will play tomorrow night at 8:00 p.m vs #2 seed Samford.
