SCOUTING FURMAN
Following a Southern Conference championship appearance last season, the Paladins were voted the preseason favorites in both polls for 2022-23. Furman is currently 12-5 overall and 3-1 in the conference. The Paladins have won five of the last six with the only loss coming at Western Carolina, 79-67. Most recently, Furman defeated ETSU, 70-56, on the road.
Three players are scoring in double figures for Furman led by Mike Bothwell with 19.5 PPG. The senior currently ranks second in the conference in scoring, only behind Jake Stephens of Chattanooga. Jalen Slawson, who averages 14.4 PPG, leads the Paladins in rebounds with 6.9 per game. Furman leads the SoCon in scoring with 81.9 PPG and scoring margin at 10.4.
RECENT ACTION
After leading for the first 15 minutes, two turnovers by the Bears at midcourt were enough to swing the momentum in Western Carolina's favor on Saturday, earning a 73-45 victory for the Catamounts. Mercer controlled the game for much of the first half, leading by as much as six points on multiple occasions. The second half scoring woes continued for the Bears as Mercer faced another extensive field goal drought and only scored 22 points in the final period.
Shawn Walker Jr. led the team with 13 points in his third game with the team-lead in scoring. The Bears only surrendered nine turnovers to the Catamounts, but 30% shooting was not enough to top WCU.
