
Bears Fall to UMBC in Close Game

BALTIMORE, MD. – The Mercer men's lacrosse team dropped their final nonconference game against UMBC 8-13 in Baltimore, Maryland on Saturday, March 11. The Bears move to 1-6 and the Retrievers move to 5-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Six Bears contributed to the scoring on the afternoon. Freshmen attackmen Michael Frederick had two goals, senior attackman Parker Junod had two goals, senior midfield Khory Reid, senior midfield Dean Draughn, sophomore midfielder Connor Panebianco, and freshmen midfielder Thomas Strong all scored one goal for the Bears.
Parker Junod would open scoring for the Bears with a 12-yard step down goal from a Kyle Cox assist. The Bears would add another goal, this time from Michael Frederick off a Thomas Strong assist. Frederick would add his second goal one minute later for the bears off a Junod assist. UMBC would score four goals to end the first quarter. The Bears would be down 3-4 heading into the second quarter.
The Retrievers would score first in the second quarter. Dean Draughn would start the scoring off for the Bears in the second quarter off a Drew Mayts assist. One minute later the Junod would score an unassisted goal off a dodge from the wing. Panebianco would give the Bears the lead heading into halftime.
UMBC would come out from Halftime and score three goals. The Bears would find the back of the net off a Thomas Strong goal. This goal would be Strong's first career goal for the Bears. The Bears would be down 7-8 heading into the fourth quarter.
UMBC would start off scoring in the fourth quarter with a goal thirteen minutes into the game. Khory Reid would find the back the net off a Panebianco assist. This goal would bring the game within one with ten minutes left in the game. The Retrievers would answer and score 3 late goals under three minutes to finish the game. Â
