
Bear’s Secure First Conference Win Over Detroit Mercy

MACON, Ga. – Mercer Men's Lacrosse team secured their first conference win in a 16-12 game against Detroit Mercy. This is Ryan Danehy's second win as head coach for the Mercer Bears. The Bears move to 2-6 on the season and 1-1 in ASUN conference play. Detroit Mercy moved to 0-5 on the season and 0-1 in ASUN play.
Freshman midfielder Michael Frederick led the way for the Bears with five goals, senior attackmen Parker Junod slotted in four goals and had 2 assists. Senior Faceoff specialist Ashton Wood added two goals of his own and went 18-24 from the faceoff x. Senior midfielder Kyle Cox also added two goals for himself. Senior midfield Khory Reid, freshmen midfield Jack Sullivan, and senior attackman Carl Klepper each added a goal for the Bears.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bears would start the game off incredibly strong scoring in the first minute of the game with a Michael Frederick goal with the assist coming from freshmen attackmen Zach Basisty. This would be Basisty's first collegiate point for the Bears. It would only take Ashton Wood eight more seconds to win a faceoff and go down the field to score. Frederick would score his second man up two minutes later off an assist from Carl Klepper. Detroit Mercy would answer Frederick's goal with two goals of their own making the score 2-3. Khory Reid would scoop up a groundball off a Wood faceoff win and would find his way to the middle of the field and bury it past the goalie. Frederick would complete his hat trick four minutes later off a Junod assist. The Bears would find the back of the net off a man-down situation with 2:50 left in the quarter. This goal would be Junod's second of the day putting the score at 6-2 heading into the second quarter.
The Titans would start the second quarter out with two man-up goals back-to-back. Mr. Frederick would add his fourth of the day off an unassisted goal. The Titans would continue to fight scoring one minute after the Bears. However, Parker Junod would score two goals to push the Bears lead to 9-5. The Titans would find the back of the net one last time before the end of the second quarter. The score heading into halftime 9-6.
Kyle Cox would open the scoring in the third quarter off a dodge down the alley. This would be his first goal of the afternoon. The Titan's would answer with a goal of their own three minutes later. Michael Frederick would put in his final goal of the afternoon off the assist from Jack Sullivan. Carl Klepper would add his goal three minutes later off the assist from Parker Junod. The score heading into the fourth quarter was 12-7, in favor of the Bears.
Detroit would start the scoring off in the final quarter. Cox would secure his second goal of the game off a dodge from behind the goal. Ashton would win the next faceoff and would sprint down the middle of the field and would find the back of the net. The Titan's would score three before the Bears would score again. The final goal for the Bears came from Parker Junod. The Titans would score one more before the final whistle making the score 16-12.
Senior Goalie Colin Kelley made eight save this afternoon. Senior defenseman Wesley Chairs, Graduate defenseman Connor Purcell and senior defenseman Drew Mayts were able to keep the Titan's at bay.
UP NEXT: The Bears will travel to Jacksonville, Florida next Saturday, March 25 at 12 p.m. to take on Top 20 Ranked Jacksonville University.
