MACON, Ga. – The Mercer softball team dominated play this afternoon in Sikes Field with a 10-2 win over the Alabama State Hornets. The game was showcased by four homeruns, six strikeouts, and a five inning run rule.Â
"Very happy with the way we swung the bats tonight! When you win every inning of a ball game, it's hard to find any negatives. I was proud of the adjustments after a tough week. Hedgecock and Barton led the charge tonight…hoping they are heating up at just the right time," said coach Fico. "Katie also did a great job in the circle for us! She worked ahead of almost every batter and it paid off. It was a great way to go into a short break before we take on conference play."
How It Happened
Katie Rearley stepped in to the circle for Bears and struck out the first two batters. Sophie Sumner caught a runner at second thanks to Rebeca Laudino to retire the inning. Laudino picked up the first run on the game and made it all the way to third. She was brought home by a grounded out RBI from Kylie Helm to finish the first with the Bears leading 1-0. Mercer serves a three up three down in the top of the second. Morgan Hall was the first on base and was able to steal to second. Hall scored on a fielders choice after Sumner singled. Mercer finished the inning with two left on base and ahead, 2-0.Â
Nothing offensively happed with the Hornets at the top of the third. The same thing could not be said for the Bears. Helm homered to right field, picking up her fourth season homerun. Hall singled to left field and was brought home thanks to a homerun from Avery Barton. The Bears concluded the third with three runs on four hits. Alabama State picked up their first run of the game in the top of the fourth, but Mercer quickly when Tori Hedgecock homered to bring home Woods and Laudino after they singled to get on base. Bailey Ledvina got on bag due to an error, advanced due to a single from Barton and was brought home from a flied out to center field from Lillian Wilkerson. Four hits on four runs got the Bears leading 9-1 heading into the fifth.Â
Rearley retired after six strikeouts for Grace Taylor. Alabama State was able to bring one run in to push it to the bottom of the fifth. Second up to bat in the bottom, Hedgecock hit her second bomb of the day over the fence to secure the Bear victory 10-2.
