
Comeback Falls Short Against Furman

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Mercer men's tennis program (10-12, 4-2) nearly overcame a 3-0 deficit to Furman (9-13, 3-3) but fell just short as Furman won 4-3.

The Paladins won the doubles point with wins on courts one and two. The teams played out the match on court three as Nemanja Stefanovic and Marceau Foulihoux earned their eighth win overall and fifth in conference play with a 6-4 victory over Jerry Barton and Alex Han.

Furman won the first two singles matches to finish on courts one and two to take a 3-0 lead. The lower half of Mercer's lineup stepped up to bring the match close again.

Samuel MacLeod finished next on court five, defeating Connor Laymon 6-2, 6-3. MacLeod now has 11 wins this season which is second-best on the team and is tied for the team lead with five conference wins.

Court six was next to finish as Samuel Barrow beat Han 6-2, 6-2 for his fourth win in conference play. Foulihoux earned the tying point on court four. He won the first set over Thomas Kennedy 6-2 before dropping the second set, 6-4. He responded in the third set with a 6-4 win to extend the team effort. Foulihoux leads the team with 15 wins on the season and five in SoCon play.

The deciding point came down to Stefanovic versus Emil Westling on court three. Stefanovic fell in the first set 6-4 but bounced back in the second set, 7-5. In the third set, Stefanovic won an early break to lead 3-1. Westling answered with a break of his own to put Stefanovic ahead 5-4 with a chance to win. Westling won the next three games to win the third set 7-5 and clinch the match for Furman.

UP NEXT: Mercer will play its final match of the regular season against Samford on Saturday, April 15 at 12 p.m. at the LeRoy Peddy Tennis Center.
