
Mercer Rolls To 20-7 Win Over Winthrop

Mercer scored at least 20 goals for third straight game in Big South play
MACON, Ga. – Mercer women's lacrosse scored 15 goals in the first half for the second consecutive game and cruised to dominant 20-7 win over Winthrop on Wednesday afternoon from Five Star Stadium.
With the win, the Bears move to 3-0 in conference play and have scored at least 20 goals while conceding less than 10 in all three of the wins.
Mercer outshot Winthrop 36-14 including a 29-13 shots on goal advantage. Mercer once again owned the draw control battle with a 20-8 edge over the Eagles in that department.
Shannon Urey was one of 11 different Mercer goal scorers on the day. Urey led the Bears with four goals, surpassing her previous season-high of 44 goals as she now leads the Big south with 47 goals on the year.Â
Erin Degnan had three goals and one assist for a 4-point afternoon. She also added four draw controls and two caused turnovers.
Kayla Soltys led Mercer with six draw controls and scored a goal, her third consecutive game with a goal.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Winthrop scored the first two goals of the game and were up 2-0 less than three minutes into the game.
Lyndsey Lewis scored the first of nine unanswered goals for the Bears and Mercer was suddenly up 9-2 less than one minute into the second quarter. The run included three consecutive goals from Degnan in the closing minutes of the first quarter.
After Winthrop got one back to make it 9-3, Mercer scored the next six goals – with Emily Barnes and Sami Lowinger scoring two each – two extend Mercer's lead to 15-3.
In the second half, freshman Caroline Glus scored two goals, her third consecutive game with a goal and sophomore Sarah Leahy scored her third career goal.
