Mocs scored two goals in final five minutes

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Mercer women's soccer team led 2-1 in the final minutes but Chattanooga scored two goals in the final five minutes to defeat Mercer 3-2 Thursday night at Chattanooga.

In the SoCon opener for both teams, Mercer took the lead in the 24th minute as Kendall Cook crossed a ball from the right corner and Jada Moorman headed home her eighth goal of the year to put Mercer out in front 1-0.

Chattanooga answered back with a goal in the 33rd minute and the two teams went into halftime tied at one.

The Bears had numerous chances in the second half to take the lead and eventually they did. In the 75th minute, Lena Dykes sent in a ball into the box that found the head of freshman Larkin Thomason who scored her eighth goal of the season and put Mercer up 2-1.

Chattanooga scored in the 86th minute off a cross into the box and in the 89th minute directly off a corner kick to escape with a 3-2 win over the Bears.

Shots were almost even as Chattanooga had 15 shots to Mercer's 14 and seven shots on goal to Mercer's six.

Mercer returns home on Sunday as it welcomes UNCG to Betts Stadium for a 2 p.m. kickoff.

TOP BEARS

+ Mercer forwards Jada Moorman and Larkin Thomason continued to find the back of the net with each scoring their eighth goal of the season. Moorman had five shots in the game and Thomason, four.
+ Lena Dykes earned the Grit Chain as she assisted on Thomason's go ahead goal and was excellent defensively for the Bears.

NOTABLES

+ Mercer outshot Chattanooga 10-6 in the second half.
+ Mercer had seven corner kicks to just three for Chattanooga, but the Mocs made the most of the few they had by scoring in the 89th minute off one.
+ Lindsay Bell made four saves in goal for the Bears.
+ Moorman's goal gives her five goals in her last five games.
