Men's Basketball Hosts Conference-Leading Western Carolina Saturday

MACON – Mercer men's basketball (8-8, 1-2) faces a difficult task of containing the Preseason Southern Conference Player of the Year Vonterius Woolbright and the league-leading Catamounts (14-2, 3-0) on Saturday. The test will begin at 2 p.m. and will be available on ESPN+.
The last meeting between the two squads was taken down to the wire in a battle of fouls and free throws. The Catamounts ultimately came out on top with a three-point victory 71-68. Then-freshman Jah Quinones put up a career-high 19 points shooting a perfect 8-of-8 from the field and 2-of-2 from three for the Bears.

| Mercer fell just short of a second conference win on the road at Wofford on Wednesday. The Bears trailed by as much as 10 and led by as much as 9 in the back-and-forth matchup. The Bears were up by one but fouled on the other end to give the Terriers a one-and-one which they used to seal the game. Mercer's bench racked up 54 points, led by David Thomas (19) and Alex Holt (season-high 14). |

| Western Carolina sits at the top of the league with a 14-2 overall and 3-0 SoCon record. The Catamounts got an impressive 10-point win earlier this season at Notre Dame. The team's two losses came back-to-back at the beginning of December at Gardner-Webb and High Point. Senior guard Vonterius Woolbright was chosen as the Preseason Southern Conference Player of the Year and is performing accordingly. He is currently second in the NCAA in rebounds per game (12.4) and first in double-doubles (13). Woolbright also leads the conference in scoring with 21.0 points per game. Woolbright is not a one-man show, as teammates Tre Jackson and Russell Jones Jr. were also preseason all-conference selections and are averaging double-digit scoring. |
