MACON – The Mercer softball team will continue its 14-game stretch away from home this weekend when the Bears pack up their show and head to Boiling Springs, N.C., for the Gardner-Webb-hosted Spring In The Springs tournament on Saturday and Sunday at Brinkley Softball Stadium.
Â
The Bears (7-5) are scheduled for four games at the rain-altered 3-day event, including a pair of matchups against the host-Bulldogs and lone matchups with both North Carolina A&T and Binghamton. Fans unable to make the trip to southwest North Carolina can still follow all of the matchups for free via live statistics links provided by the GWU athletics department.
Â
Mercer is fresh from a 6-5 setback at in-state rival Georgia Tech on Wednesday evening. The Bears used a 3-run homer from Avery Barton to grab a 5-2 lead in the top of the fifth inning of that contest, but the red-hot Yellow Jackets knotted the score up in the sixth, and then manufactured the winning score in the bottom of the seventh.
Â
MU will tote one of the nation's top power-hitting clubs into the weekend, including NCAA Division I's 8th-best home runs per game (1.55) squad. The Bears also pace the Southern Conference in four other offensive statistical categories, including the league's top batting average (.317).

SCOUTING BINGHAMTON |
The Bearcats (7-3) will see their first action of the season since posting a 3-2 mark at the Winthrop Eagle Classic, Feb. 16-18, in Rock Hill, S.C. Picked to finish a close second in the race for the America East crown in a preseason poll of the league's head coaches, Binghamton has already registered 19 doubles through 10 games this season, and will also bring one of the nation's top strikeout-to-walk pitching staffs into Boiling Springs as well.  Senior Allison L'Amoreaux has carried the load for the Bearcats both at the plate and in the circle. Offensively, L'Amoreaux has compiled a team-best .313 batting average to go along with six extra-base hits and 11 RBI while, in the middle, she boasts a perfect 4-0 record and a 2.66 earned run average with 33 strikeouts in 26-1/3 innings pitched. |
SCOUTING NORTH CAROLINA A&T |
The Aggies (6-8) have won four of their last five outings, including a series win over Coppin State on Friday and Saturday, as well a home doubleheader sweep of Norfolk State on Sunday. They also registered triumphs over both Jackson State and Alabama State at the HBCU Invitational two weeks ago. Â North Carolina A&T possesses one of the nation's top stolen bases per game (2.14) teams, and are already 30-for-33 on the base paths this season. Junior Joey Barkhimer boasts a team-best .375 batting clip to go along with two doubles, a pair of homers and six RBI, while senior Alyxx Estrada is hitting .325 with four extra-base hits (HR) and a team-best 12 RBI. Estrada (7-for-7) and freshman Destiny Sims are a combined 13-for-13 on stolen base attempts in 2024. |
SCOUTING GARDNER-WEBB |
The Running Bulldogs (10-6) snapped a three-game skid with an abbreviated 8-0 win over visiting Howard on Sunday that gave G-W their eighth home win of the campaign. Seven of Gardner-Webb's 10 victories this season have come in tournament play at Brinkley Softball Stadium. Â More than 25 percent of Gardner-Webb's total base hits this season have been of the extra-base variety. The Running Bulldogs rank eighth among all NCAA Division I teams with 31 doubles already this season, and rank 21st, nationally, with 0.40 triples per game. Adrienne Visintine has been the most lethal at the plate for G-W, hitting .370 with eight extra-base hits (4 HR) and 12 RBI, while fellow senior Araceli Pesqueira boasts a .362 clip with six extra-base hits and 11 RBI. |
