MACON – The Mercer men's tennis team will play the second of a two-match road swing on Wednesday when the Bears travel to Johnson City, Tenn., to take on East Tennessee State. First serves are scheduled for 11 a.m. at the Dave Mullins Tennis Complex.
Â
The Bears (4-9, 2-0 SoCon) are flying high after stretching their season-longest winning streak out to three matches with a convincing 6-1 decision at UNC Greensboro on Sunday. Mercer yielded just 10 games in capturing all three doubles matches, then tacked up a quintet of singles matchups in straight sets.
Â
The Bucs (5-9, 2-0) put the kibosh on a three-match slide with a 5-2 triumph over visiting Wofford on Sunday. ETSU, likewise, tacked up wins in all three doubles contests, and then put the finishing touches on its third home win of the campaign by taking four of the six matchups in singles competition.
Â
MU senior Samuel Barrow has logged victories in five of his eight singles outings during the spring campaign, including a trio of triumphs on court No. 5, and is one of four Bears (Lucas Dini, Marceau Fouilhoux, Samuel MacLeod) to come away victorious in the last three singles appearances. Mercer's tandem of Fouilhoux and Nemanja Stefanovic sports a 5-6 record at No. 2 singles, including a current run of four consecutive wins.
Â
ETSU senior Dimitri Badra boass a team-best seven singles victories in 2024, and has won each of his last four matchups at No. 1 singles, including a 6-2, 6-1 rout of Wofford's Ashe Ray on Sunday. Venezuelan Francisco Lamas is a perfect 6-0 at No. 6 singles this season, including a trio of matchups that progressed to a third set. ETSU's No. 1 doubles tandem of senior Milledge Cossu and redshirt junior Francisco Lamas are 3-3 on court No. 1 during the spring, with all three of their victories having been logged over the last month.
Â
East Tennessee State leads the all-time series, 15-1, but the Bears got on the board in the series last season with a 4-3 ousting of the Bucs. ETSU returned the favor with a 4-0 shutout in the Southern Conference Tournament in April, however.
