Mercer's and Dubnik's second win of spring season
MACON, Ga. - The Mercer women's golf team had its best round at the Brickyard Collegiate on Tuesday, shooting a final round of 2-over, 290 as the Bears earned their second win of the spring season as Brickyard Collegiate Champions from Brickyard Golf Club in Macon, Georgia.
Mercer finished the tournament 18-over, 882, finishing 20 strokes ahead of runners-up Belmont and UAB who finished 38-over, 902. Entering the final round Tuesday, Mercer had just a two-shot lead over UAB in the nine-team field, but the Bears finished 18 shots better than UAB in the final round to put some distance on the leaderboard.
The Bears finish the 2023-24 season having won all three of their home tournaments, including two by 20 strokes or more. The first time in program history that Mercer has won two tournaments in the same season by 20 or more strokes.
Mikayla Dubnik won the individual championship as she finished the tournament at 1-under, 215 in the 52-player field. It marks Dubnik's second win of the spring season as she also won the Reynolds Lake Oconee championship in February.
After carding a 76 in her second round on Monday, Dubnik went out on Tuesday and earned the win, carding a 4-under, 68 to finish three shots ahead of runner-up Grace Sinclair from UAB. Dubnik had just one bogey on the day and shot a 33 on the back nine. Dubnik's 10 birdies throughout the 54-hole tournament were second most in the field.
All five Mercer Bears in the lineup finished in the top 20, including Eujin Pyon who finished in fourth place with three consistent rounds of 74-73-74 to finish 5-over, 221.
Katie Scheck had one of the highlights of the tournament for Mercer as she holed in an eagle from 70 yards on the par 5, sixth.
As a team, Mercer tied or led the field in pars (175), birdies (35), and eagles (1). Mercer also led the field in par 4's and par 5's.
COACH DRINKARD QUOTE
"This is what we needed. We needed to come in today with a lot of energy and they did. They showed up and showed out," said head coach Michele Drinkard.
"They were really determined to finish the season on a strong note, with the conference tournament coming up. They were a little embarrassed after the second round yesterday and you could tell that they got together, talked about it and wanted to finish the day strong and they did. Kim and I couldn't be more proud of the way they finished, the way they fought, and the way they enjoyed their game today. Most importantly their energy was really, really good today and that's what it takes to win championships."
"Mikayla was so frustrated when she got done yesterday, you could just tell. She had a great warm-up session and went out and played her heart out to bring home her second championship this spring. It feels good to have won all three of our home tournaments. We won two this year by double digits which we've never done before, so that's a first. I think this is great energy and motivation for us going into the Southern Conference Championship."
