GREENSBORO, N.C. – Junior Emma Dorval's RBI single up the middle with two outs in the bottom of the seventh brought Laura Vigna home with the game-winning score as fourth-seeded Mercer opened up play in the 2024 Southern Conference Tournament with a 1-0 triumph over fifth-seeded Wofford on Wednesday.
Â
The result marked the first time in six seasons that the Bears (23-28) grabbed a win in their opening game at the SoCon Tourmament, and the first shutout for the Orange & Black in the league's postseason gala since a 3-0 victory over top-seeded UNC Greensboro in the 2017 event. MU has now won three of its last four games in the SoCon Tournament as well.
Redshirt sophomore right-handed Hannah Pitts (7-8) turned in a masterful performance for the Bears, striking out three and yielding just five hits across her 10th complete game outing of the campaign. She picked up her third shutout of the season in the process as well.
Bot 7Â Â Â Â Tori Hedgecock and Kassidy Moore drew consecutive walks to load the bases full of Bears with two outs in the seventh, and Emma Dorval provided the game-winning knock four pitches later when she drove a 2-and-1 offering up the middle.
