Bears finish fifth in 16 team field
CLEMSON, S.C. - In her first collegiate tournament, freshman Emilia Väistö finished in third place at 5-under, 139 at the Tiger Classic from the campus of Clemson University.
As a team, Mercer finished in fifth place out of 16 teams in the field which featured 96 golfers. The one day tournament featured teams playing 36-holes on Monday in which the Bears carded rounds of 296 (+8) and 294 (+6) for a total score of 590 (+14). Georgia Southern won the tournament with a final score of 17-under, 559.
Väistö had two impressive rounds of 2-under, 70 and 3-under, 69 to finish the tournament 5-under and two strokes back of eventual champion Louise Reau. Väistö had just two bogeys all day over her 36 holes to go with seven birdies.
Sophomore Ella Mäki-Tanila finished tied for 22nd at 3-over, 147. Mäki-Tanila had a great second round where she shot a bogey-free 32 (-4) on the back nine for a round of 1-under, 71.
"It was good to get a day of competition under our belt and gauge where we are as a team and what we need to focus on as a team and individually," said Mercer head coach Michele Drinkard,
"Emilia played great. She is a tremendous ball striker and had herself right there competing for the individual title. Ella also showed that a bad start doesn't have to define you and came back with a closing 32 (-4) on her final nine holes. We look forward to getting back to practice and working on a few details before we face Wofford on Labor Day."
The Bears will travel to Spartanburg, South Carolina to play the Terriers on Monday, September 2.
