GREENVILLE, S.C. – After a two-week hiatus, Henry Robards and Cole Hanson took the course by storm in the first two rounds of the Furman Intercollegiate.
Robards opened the competition with a three-under 68, his second-lowest round of the fall season, to secure a spot in the top five. The sophomore from Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, carded eight birdies over the first two rounds and sits tied for fourth place individually.
Hanson recovered from a four-over opening round with a 67 in his second set of 18 holes. The graduate student lit up the scorecard with seven red numbers to end the day and is tied for 11th place.
As a unit, Mercer has the fourth-best scoring average on all par threes. The Bears also have the seventh-most birdies (27) among the field.
"We showed good effort as a team, but we left a lot of strokes out there by not putting as well as we know we can," said head coach Jason Payne.
Mercer sits just nine strokes back from the lead heading into the final 18 holes. Due to impending weather, tomorrow's round has been converted to a shotgun start beginning at 8:45 a.m. You can follow along here: Live Scoring
