STATESBORO, Ga. – Junior Hod'Abalo Isak Padio recorded his 11th straight-sets singles victory of the season to get Mercer on the board, but Georgia Southern raked in each of the other five singles matches to fuel a 6-1 win over the visiting Bears on Saturday afternoon at the Wallis Tennis Center.
Â
The decision snapped a two-match run of success for the Bears (4-5) who fell to 1-4 away from Macon with the result as well. It was the sixth victory in the last seven outings for the Eagles (9-5) who have now taken six-straight meetings in the series with MU.
Â
Georgia Southern toughed out a pair of 6-4 victories on the doubles courts to grab the early lead, then rattled off a pair of straight-sets wins in singles action to pad their team lead out to 3-0. Padio got the Bears on the board with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph over Aaron James Williams on Court No. 2, but the Eagles iced it a few minutes later when Pol del Castillo put the finishing touches on a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles.
Â
Junior Nemanja Stefanovic dropped a 6-1 decision in the opening set of the feature match on Court No. 1, but battled back to even things back up by getting the better end of an 8-6 tiebreaker with GSU's Dimitris Paliouras in the second set. Paliouras rebounded, however, to capture a deciding super set, 10-6.
Â
The Orange & Black will open up a short two-match home stand on Tuesday morning when they host Horizon League foe Belmont (5-8) in a 9 a.m. contest at the LeRoy Peddy Tennis Center. Admission to all 2025 Mercer tennis home matches is free.
