Bears Close Out Non-Conference Slate At Georgia Southern

MACON – The Mercer softball team will close the lid on the non-conference portion of its 2025 regular season schedule on Tuesday evening when the Bears trek to Statesboro for a rematch with Georgia Southern. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the GS Softball Complex.
Â
Fans unable to make the trip to Statesboro can still follow all of the action in progress for free via a live statistics link provided by the GSU athletics department. The game is also slated to be streamed live on ESPN+.
Â
The Bears (22-22) halted a five-game Southern Conference skid by taking both ends of its series-opening doubleheader at East Tennessee State on Saturday, but fell to the Bucs in Sunday's weekend finale at Betty Basler Field. MU combined for 25 hits across the three-game set, while also tacking up 5.3 runs per game. Mercer has captured seven eight scheduled contests against Georgia-based teams this season, including a 4-2 win over Georgia Southern earlier this season in Macon.
Â
The Orange & Black has tacked up plenty of hits over the last month, tallying 7.0 hits per game since its Spring Break trip through Florida at the beginning of March. It's been the defense that has been the calling card over that 19-game stretch, however, as MU has registered an impressive .977 fielding percentage with just 13 miscues over that span. The Bears had turned in eight consecutive error-free contests (61-straight innings) before a throwing miscue in the second inning of their series opener with ETSU.

SERIES HISTORY |
Georgia Southern leads the 39-year-old series, 53-18, but Mercer snapped a two-game series skid with a 4-2 win over the Eagles on February 26 at Sikes Field. Georgia Southern skewed the series by registering a 26-1 record against the Bears from 1993 to 2008. MU snapped a 12-game series skid with a 3-1 win over the Eagles on Feb. 19, 1998, but GSU won the next 14 games after that before a 4-3 victory by the Orange & Black in 2008. Mercer is 9-14 against the Eagles since the 2008 campaign. |
SCOUTING GEORGIA SOUTHERN |
The Eagles (27-16) snapped a two-game losing streak by capturing the last two games of its series at Troy over the weekend. Georgia Southern mustered just one hit in dropping the opener to the Trojans, but erupted for a dozen safeties in games two and three of the set. Â Georgia Southern's success this season has run through the circle where the Eagles boast the nation's 12th-best team earned run average (2.19) while also limiting opponents to a paltry .219 batting clip. The Eagles have yielded two or fewer earned runs in 29 of their 43 outings in 2025, and have compiled a 1.82 ERA over their last 11 games. Â Offensively, Georgia Southern will be led into Tuesday's matchup by senior first baseman Faith Barth who has turned in a .333 batting average to go along with 21 RBI and 20 runs scored. Junior Emma Davis (14-for-15) and Kayla Christensen (11-for-12) have combined for a lion's share of GSU's 40 stolen bases this season and carry batting averages of .320 and .289, respectively. |
UP NEXT FOR THE BEARS |
Mercer will return home this weekend to host a key Southern Conference series with Western Carolina (20-23, 4-8 SoCon) at Sikes Field. The squads will open up the weekend with a 4 p.m. doubleheader on Friday and close out the series with a lone contest on Saturday at 1 p.m. Admission to all three games is free. |
