Bears Split Twinbill With SoCon-Leading UNC Greensboro
4/26/2025 7:03:00 PM | Softball
MACON – Visiting UNC Greensboro used a 2-run home run in the top of the sixth inning to fuel a 5-2 win in Saturday's opener, but Mercer scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to fuel an 8-0 mercy-rule win in the nightcap and forge a doubleheader split with the Southern Conference leading Spartans on Saturday at Sikes Field.
Â
The latter result snapped a six-game series skid for the Bears (27-23, 7-9 SoCon) who registered the biggest win over their league counterparts since a 15-2 road triumph on April 9, 2016. The result also clinched a winning regular season campaign for the Orange & Black – the first since for the program since 2021.
Â
The setback snapped a three-game win streak for the Spartans (36-15, 12-5) who had captured four of their last five road outings heading into the weekend.
Â
Junior Grace Taylor struck out three and yielding just five hits in the opener, but saddled the loss anyway after surrendering four earned runs as well. Sophomore Gabby Ellis (7-5) struck out four across a 2-hit shutout in the nightcap to rake in the second win in her last three starts.
