PAWLEYS ISLAND, S.C. – The Mercer men's golf team rode hot performances from Phillips Swift and Cole Hanson to finish tied for fifth after day one of the Golfweek Fall Challenge at True Blue Golf Club.
"We had a really solid start to the season today," said head coach Jason Payne. "There were a few late mistakes that cost us positioning, but if we play like we did today for the next 36 holes, I have confidence we will be in contention until the end."
Swift, a freshman from Macon, Georgia, excelled in the first round of his collegiate career. The Stratford Academy graduate opened his day with three straight birdies. After a pair of bogeys in the last three holes, Swift made the turn and birdied two of the next three to finish with a three-under 69.
Hanson, a graduate senior, had the second-best score of the Bears in the opening round. Despite a double bogey on six, Hanson would birdie four of the next eight holes and turn in a two-under 70.
The Bears are back in action at True Blue Golf Club for the second round of the Golfweek Fall Challenge on Monday, September 8.
