Men’s Soccer Falls To Georgia Southern On Sunday Night

STATESBORO, Ga. – The Mercer men's soccer team fell to Georgia Southern, 2-1, due to a late penalty at Bo Pitts Field in Statesboro, Georgia, on Sunday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Georgia Southern's offense produced the first three shots of the night before Bryce Griffith rattled off a pair of shots within two minutes of each other around the 31st minute. The Eagles found the back of the net first after launching a counterattack off a Mercer corner kick in the 33rd minute. Charlie Votel deflected a defensive clearance into the Bears' goal that gave Georgia Southern a 1-0 lead at 32:34 in the match.
Henry Hampshaw saved the Eagles' next three shots on goal, and Will Taylor fired the Bears' first shot on goal in the 49th minute. Eli Bannister continued to add pressure and fired a shot off the crossbar in the 56th minute. In the 70th minute, Christopher Nezianya backheeled a pass to Taylor in the box, and Taylor shook off his defender before he curled a shot into the far post for the equalizer.
The officials went to video review in the 83rd minute and awarded Georgia Southern a penalty. Freshman Broden Beorlegui stepped up to the spot and slotted his fifth goal of the year into the bottom right corner for the game-winning goal.
