Six different Bears collect hits in the 9-1 season-opening loss
MACON, Ga. – A pair of timely hits by Kent State resulted in a sour start to the 2017 season for Mercer, which lost its opening game, 9-1, to the visiting Golden Flashes in five innings Friday afternoon at Sikes Field.

Kent State used a two-run double and a three-run home run to propel itself to an 8-0 advantage before the Bears got on the board with an RBI-single by Maxine Rodriguez in the bottom of the fourth inning. The loss dropped Mercer to 0-1 overall.

Rodriguez started the contest in the circle and took the loss after logging 3.1 innings and allowing seven earned runs. Megan Bilgri relieved Rodriguez in the fourth inning and faced the final eight batters of the mercy-rule induced game.

Kent State improved to 1-1 after suffering a 3-2 loss in extra innings to Dayton earlier Friday.

PLAYER OF THE GAME
Meghan Rud got off to a quick start with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate and added her first stolen base of the season. Her multi-hit performance was one of two by the Bears in their season opener.
