Murray State Uses Long Ball to Down Mercer, 9-4
2/10/2017 7:46:00 PM | Softball
Strong performances from Rud, Mauga are not enough to overcome visiting Racers
MACON, Ga. – Twelve collective hits were not enough to lead Mercer to its first win of the new season, as Murray State used four long balls to down the hosting Bears, 9-4, Friday afternoon at Sikes Field in the Mercer Invitational.
Â
Meghan Rud went 4-for-4 and Quirisa Mauga launched her first home run of the season, but a lack of timely hitting by the Bears made it tough to overcome the Racers' power surge: a pair of long balls from both Jessica Twaddle and Jocelynn Rodgers.
Â
Mauga's solo shot tied the game, 2-2, in the bottom of the third inning before Danielle Castleberry gave the Bears a 3-2 lead with an RBI-single in the same frame. It did not take long for Murray State to bounce back, however, as it plated five runs in the top of the fourth to pull away. Jill McElderry took the loss after lasting three innings in the circle before she was relieved by Megan Bilgri.
Â
Mercer is now 0-2 to start the season while the Racers earned the season-opening win.
Â
PLAYER OF THE GAME
The hot start continued for Meghan Rud, who tied a career-high with four hits in the Bears' second game of the day. Rud picked up four singles in her four at-bats, leading to two runs scored and her second stolen base of the season.
Â
STAT OF THE GAME
The Bears left 10 runners on base against Murray State, proving to hurt their chances of keeping up with the four-home run effort by the Racers. Three Bears left three runners apiece on the basepaths.
