Second Half Lifts Mercer Past Detroit Mercy

MACON, Ga. – After a 6-6 first half, Mercer outscored Detroit Mercy 4-2 in the second half to secure the Bears' first win of the season. Jake Nelson led Mercer with four goals and five points, while Scott Baird added two goals and two assists for four points.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Detroit Mercy scored first and the teams traded goals throughout the first quarter as the Titans went up 4-3 at the end of the opening period. Mercer tied the game, 4-4, with a goal from Shawn Carter at the beginning of the second quarter, but a pair of goals from the Titans gave Detroit Mercy its largest lead, 6-4, with 9:13 remaining in the half. Nelson and Baird scored back-to-back goals for Mercer in the final five minutes of the half to make it 6-6 as the game went to halftime.

The Titans scored the first goal of the second half to go up 7-6 and held on to the lead for several minutes. The Bears used a pair of goals in the final two minutes of the third period to take an 8-7 lead. Early in the fourth quarter, Nelson dished the ball to Kevin Yoggy, who found the back of the net and stretched Mercer's lead to 9-7 with 13:48 to play. Another goal for each team in the final five minutes pushed the final score to 10-8 as the Bears held on for the win.
