The Bears score nine runs in the final two innings
MACON, Ga. – Quirisa Mauga hit a game-ending grand slam in the sixth inning to cap a furious rally in Mercer's 9-1 win over Fort Wayne Saturday in the Black & Orange Challenge at Sikes Field.
Â
Trailing 1-0 with only two hits to their name through four innings, the Bears collected nine runs on seven hits over the final two frames to end a mercy-rule induced contest. Mercer got back to .500 (6-6) with win, its second straight. The Mastodons fell to 0-10.
Â
Mauga's home run came after Meghan Rud, Taylor Miller and Megan Lane all reached on consecutive bunt singles to open the sixth inning. The Bears plated five runs the inning prior, highlighted by Abby Walsh's two-run long ball. Caroline Taylor and Emma Andrew added a sacrifice fly and RBI-double, respectively, in the frame as well.
Â
Jill McElderry (2-3) limited Fort Wayne to one hit – a solo home run – over four quality innings pitched and struck out three batters. Maxine Rodriguez added two scoreless innings of relief and scattered three hits.
Â
PLAYER OF THE GAME
The bats came to the rescue eventually, but McElderry kept the Bears in it long enough to see the comeback materialize. Other than the solo home run she allowed in the top of the fourth, McElderry did not allow a runner past first base.
Â
STAT OF THE GAME
Two hits in four innings versus seven hits in two innings. The Bears got busy at the plate in the fifth and sixth innings to overcome a sluggish start. Despite collecting only two hits through four innings, Mercer did draw five walks in that period.
