Stella Preston adds a complete-game performance in the circle
MACON, Ga. – The Bears' late-inning power surge against Fort Wayne earlier in the day carried over into a power-happy 8-1 win for Mercer against Savannah State in the Black & Orange Challenge Saturday night at Sikes Field.
Â
Three Bears – Quirisa Mauga, Meghan Rud and Megan Lane – hit home runs in consecutive innings to give starting pitcher Stella Preston more than enough cushion to toss her third complete game of the season for the win.
Â
Preston stifled the Savannah State (0-14) bats, allowing only three hits over seven frames. She is 3-1 on the season with a 2.16 ERA. The Tigers led 1-0 after the top of the first, but Mercer went on to score six runs over the next four frames.
Â
Mercer improved to 7-6 overall with its third straight win. The Bears will face Fort Wayne (2:30 p.m.) and Savannah State (4:45 p.m.) again Sunday in the final two contests of the 2017 Black & Orange Challenge.
Â
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Meghan Rud unloaded against the Bears' intrastate foe, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs, three runs scored, two stolen bases and her second career home run. The long ball was unique in comparison to last year's round-tripper, which was an inside-the-park home run. The performance was Rud's sixth multi-hit game and third in which she had at least three hits.
Â
STAT OF THE GAME
Five of Mercer's 10 hits went for extra bases. In addition to the three home runs by Mauga, Rud and Lane, Danielle Castleberry roped a triple and Abby Walsh picked up a double.
Â
PITCHER'S OF RECORD
"I think Stella pitched a great game tonight; she hit her spots and kept Savannah State's batters off balance all game.
Â
"It looks like we're getting in a bit of a groove offensively. We are doing a better job of picking our pitches and being aggressive on good strikes. We definitely did a lot better of getting runners across [the plate] this game. There's still some things to work on, obviously, but today we brought awesome defense, pitching and offense to the field."
