Taylor Miller collects a pair of hits to extend hitting streak
MACON, Ga. – A three-run third inning was not enough for Mercer to earn its fourth straight win, as the Bears fell, 4-3, to Fort Wayne on Sunday in the Black & Orange Challenge at Sikes Field.
Â
Mercer (7-7) owned a 3-2 lead through four innings before Fort Wayne (2-10) scored twice in the top of the fifth to overcome the deficit and eventually hang on for its second win in as many games played. Stella Preston took the loss despite the game-winning run being unearned due to a fielding error. The freshman tossed five innings and struck out two.
Â
Offensively, Taylor Miller led the Bears with a 2-for-4 performance, her second multi-hit outing in the last three games. Abby Walsh led off Mercer's three-run frame with a solo home run and Quirisa Mauga added a sacrifice fly for the then-go-ahead run.
Â
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Walsh was efficient at the plate Sunday, leaving the yard for the third time this season while drawing a walk and adding a sacrifice bunt in the sixth. The home run pushed Walsh's RBI total to seven.
